About Sleep Deprivation

Whereas normal people feel rejuvenated after a normal period of sleep, depressed patients feel better when they stay up all night. Some treatments for depressed patients were to manipulate their sleep wake cycles to interfere with REM sleep that causes symptoms of sleep deprivation. The treatment actually works to alleviate the depressed mood in patients. However, if allowed to go back into a regular sleep, symptoms of depression return upon awakening.

Determining the usual sleep patterns of depressed patients and deliberately changing their times of going to sleep and of waking up helps to ease the symptoms of depression. The scientific thinking that was done to explain why changing the sleep wake cycle or interfering with REM sleep helped depressed patients, had to do with the brain’s programming for sleep and wake cycles. If the brain had become biologically misaligned in its sleep and wake cycle programming then re adjusting the timing of sleep and wake might also be re adjusting the brain’s reaction to stress.

This treatment for depressed patients is using natural or biological rhythm therapies and is essentially non pharmacological. The treatment is, however, complicated and requires time, effort and expense to readjust the brain biologically rather than using drugs. The fact that these non drug interventions work is actually encouraging in the development of methods to cure problems of the mind. Too many people give up hope when working with depressed people. Knowing that sleep deprivation treatment works is an encouraging prospect for depressed people and for those who work with depressed people.

Most people who work with depressed people begin to identify with the depressed person and his depression is contagious. Studying treatments of sleep deprivation clinically can help those who make treatment plans for the depressed patient to keep his distance from the disease by concentrating on the possibilities of cure.
