A few years ago ordering a custom made cubic zirconia ring would make most people and jewelers laugh. Why would anyone have a gold ring created with a cheap Cubic Zirconia? It made no sense because cubic zirconia gems were not of very good quality and it was very rare for a faux gem to be set in a genuine precious metal mounting. But why does it have to be gold? It should be gold when crafting anything custom made because otherwise it can’t be heated and altered and crafted to your specifications.
Only silver and gold and platinum and titanium and genuine precious metals can be filed, drilled, polished etc to custom designs because plated versions and bathed or dipped or electroplated styles are done in a factory, created in set styles and plated or bathed or coated or electroplated after the ring has been formed. Once it has been plated, reheating to change it’s shape or style or to add gems will only destroy the ring. So all custom made cubic zirconia ring designs must be crafted in sterling silver that is pure or gold or platinum and therefore it didn’t used to be practical.
However, nowadays, CZ stones are such good quality that many manufacturers and jewelers are creating solid 14k and 18k gold designs, especially for engagement rings and bridal sets. This has opened up the field of possibilities to include many custom designers who specialize in crafting unique ring designs that are forged in precious metals but are more affordable because the stones are CZs instead of diamonds or other precious gems.
If you are looking to save money on your wedding then cutting back on the amount of cash you spend on the traditionally expensive engagement and wedding rings might be the easiest way to do it. If you can find a jeweler who can produce a high quality cubic zirconia ring in a gold setting you could get something that looks just as good as the real thing at a small fraction of the cost.
