Can Teenagers Get Colored Contact Lenses?

For anyone who has ever asked the question can teenagers get colored contact lenses, the answer is yes. There are probably more teenagers (than older adults) who are more fashion conscience, today. This is due to the active, and busy teen social calendar. Teenagers seem to have their own social, and fashion trend that keeps them forever changing. Teenagers have a tendency to want to experiment with different, and unique things. This could also include shocking their parents with blue eyes, one day and purple eyes the next day.

Many responsible teenagers own several pair of colored contact lens. If your teen is fashion conscience and responsible enough to properly care for her lens, why not let her have them. Some teenagers will change eye color every time they change shoe color. This is typical of this age group. The downside is in an effort to keep up with their peers teenagers don’t always think of the risks involved. So you as a parent must point out the dangers of out properly caring for their non prescription colored contacts.

Many teens will save up and purchase their lens from convenient stores or gas stations. These are not corrective lens and shouldn’t be worn in place of them. They are also non prescription and shouldn’t be worn over long periods of time. There is always the possibility of eye infections and near blind experiences. Teenagers and parents should be educated about the ups and downs of colored contact lens.

If your teen is determined to wear colored contact lens at least help her/him be safe. They only cost a few dollars and a few minutes at a near by gas station to purchase and pop in the contacts, on their way to school. The side effects can be horrific if infection or other eye diseases set in. Talk to your teen about the importance of choosing safe colored contact lenses from a qualified optometrist and not a gas station attendant.
