Propane fire pits send gas through a burner in the fire bowl which is lit when the valve is opened. The gas comes from a pressurized tank which feeds the propane by using pressure. The heat intensity can be directly controlled by moving the dial to the left or right.

Wood fire pits require you to place several wooden logs into the fire bowl before use. After lighting them they will get hotter until they reach a peak. As the heat dies down, more logs can be added to keep the fire going. The fire is kept within a fire basin which looks like a bowl. This shape directs the flames upwards and keeps them under control.
