Walk In Closet Systems

The design of a walk in closet is very important when it comes to incorporating use with functionality and accessibility. Designing a closet can seem like an enormous project, however, it tends to be something any Do It Yourselfer can complete.

The first thing you need to consider when doing closet design is the door. Traditional and bi-fold doors may offer a user additional storage by attaching racks or shelving to the door, inside of the closet. Sliding doors are another popular choice but they fail to provide additional storage to the homeowner.

Consider using cedar wood as a wall lining for your closet. Cedar contains specific chemicals that act as a repellent for bugs and moths that may potentially harm your clothing. If cedar is not a possibility, be sure to hang insect repellent sachets. These sachets can be stored away on shelving or hung on a hook, out of the away from sight.

A walk in closet requires adequate lighting that is easily accessible and able to provide a light to every area of the closet. A window is not the ideal source of lighting for a closet because it allows in harmful UV rays that can lighten your clothing. A switch controlled light is ideal for a walk in closet. These lights often provide multiple spot lights, which allow you to move the focus of the light to any area of the closet.

When it comes to designing the actual storage area for your belongings, there are three commonly used cube storage units, shelving units, hang-bar units, and drawer units. Shelving can be placed on any wall in a walk in closet. You can choose to place shelving along an entire wall in several layers. This allows mass storage that is fully accessible by you. Shelving can be placed on top of a hang-bar unit. Closet bars are a popular choice for storing away more formal clothing.

Hanging bars allow you to comfortably store a full suit or dress, without having to fold it up; which potentially causes wrinkles in the clothing. Drawer units are a very popular choice in walk in closets. These are designed to protect your belongings by completely enclosing them. Drawer units are also perfect for the storage of non clothing items. All three of these storage choices can be placed along walls in the closet. Some styles, such as the drawer unit, can be placed in the middle of a walk in closet for additional storage space.
